Before planning your care. Your assessment and care plan are individual. Bring existing records and discuss your questions with the clinical team.

01 / UNDERSTAND THE CONCERN

Want to understand pain relief and anaesthesia for birth?

Labour pain relief and anaesthesia for a caesarean are related but different decisions. Your maternity and anaesthesia teams plan care around you and the baby.

Discuss your questions during pregnancy where possible. In an urgent situation, the team explains the safest appropriate approach for the circumstances.

Concerns worth discussing

Tell the clinician what you have noticed, when it began and how it affects daily life.

  • Questions about pain relief during labour

  • A planned caesarean or a discussion about possible operative delivery

  • An earlier difficult anaesthetic, reaction or concern you want to explain

02 / YOUR CONSULTATION

Start with an individual assessment.

The anaesthetist reviews your pregnancy history, health, medicines, allergies and previous anaesthesia or birth experiences.

Ask how the proposed option works, what you may feel and what alternatives exist. The plan may change according to progress in labour or the urgency of delivery.

Bring your questions, existing reports and current medicines. Discuss what the assessment means, which care fits your needs and how follow-up will work.

03 / UNDERSTAND YOUR CHOICES

Your assessment and care plan

The right approach depends on your symptoms, examination and health history. Your clinician will explain suitable choices and alternatives.

01

Discuss labour pain-relief options

Your maternity team explains options, including whether an epidural is appropriate for you.

ASK YOUR CLINICIAN

Is this appropriate for me, and what alternatives should I consider?

02

Regional anaesthesia for caesarean

A spinal or epidural may numb the lower body while you remain awake, where clinically suitable.

ASK YOUR CLINICIAN

What benefits and possible side effects should I understand?

03

General anaesthesia when needed

A general anaesthetic may be used when urgency or clinical factors make it the appropriate approach.

ASK YOUR CLINICIAN

What preparation and follow-up would I need?

Your clinician will explain which options fit your assessment.

MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION

Benefits, limits & possible risks

Each method has benefits, limits and possible side effects. Ask about your individual risks and recovery; one birth plan cannot guarantee a particular anaesthetic or delivery experience.

Plan your follow-up.

Follow the maternity team’s recovery instructions and tell them promptly about concerns after the birth or anaesthetic.

Discuss your care plan

04 / MAKE YOUR VISIT EASIER

Know what to bring.
Know what to ask.

Travelling from Katihar, Araria or Kishanganj? Confirm your consultation time with the team before you set out.

Your consultation checklist

  • Bring your antenatal records and details of any proposed delivery plan.
  • List medicines, allergies and earlier spinal, epidural or general anaesthesia experiences.
  • Ask your maternity team when to discuss anaesthesia and how preparation instructions will be provided.

Fees, estimates & insurance

Ask our team about the consultation fee. Treatment costs depend on the assessment and proposed care.

Request an estimate for the recommended care and follow-up. If a procedure is advised, ask about tests, anaesthesia, hospital stay and any separate charges. Confirm insurance acceptance and approval requirements before admission.

Ask the team about costs

05 / YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A little clarity
before your visit.

Have a question about your own symptoms, reports or care plan? Discuss it with your clinician.

9234606330
Is an epidural the same as a general anaesthetic?
No. An epidural numbs part of the body, while a general anaesthetic makes you unconscious.
Will I be awake during a caesarean?
Many caesareans use a spinal or epidural so the mother is awake. The anaesthetist explains what is appropriate in your situation.
Can the plan change during labour?
Yes. Clinical needs and the urgency of delivery may change. The treating team will explain the options and reasons.
