01 / UNDERSTANDING YOUR CARE
A clearer picture.
Difficulty conceiving can involve either partner or a combination of factors. A male fertility specialist can review sperm results alongside health history, medicines and examination findings. The aim is to identify useful next steps without assigning blame.
Bring previous semen reports, including the date and collection details. If further testing is recommended, ask how to prepare and when to return for a review. A single result may need confirming before a treatment decision.
Fertility assessment is a shared process: both partners may need evaluation. An abnormal semen result does not by itself establish the cause or predict whether pregnancy is possible.
How your concern is assessed.
Evaluation may include semen analysis, an examination and selected hormone tests. Other investigations are considered when the history or results suggest they would be useful, rather than ordering every test routinely.
Tell the doctor about past operations, testicular problems, illnesses and any testosterone or bodybuilding products. Discuss work exposures or habits you are worried about. Do not start hormone medicines or fertility supplements without advice.
What to discuss with your doctor.
- Difficulty conceiving or concerns about an existing semen report
- A known varicocele, past testicular surgery or testicular injury
- Erection or ejaculation concerns that affect attempts to conceive
Care options explained.
Your doctor will discuss which options fit your assessment.
Review and cause-specific care
Advice depends on the findings. Some causes may be treatable, while others need a discussion of fertility support or referral. Treatment cannot guarantee pregnancy.
Varicocele treatment
A varicocele is an enlargement of veins around a testicle. Treatment may be considered in selected men with infertility and relevant findings; not every varicocele needs an operation.
Coordinated fertility referral
If assisted conception or specialised sperm retrieval is considered, ask about the appropriate centre, tests and referral plan. This page does not confirm IVF or laboratory facilities at the hospital.
Benefits, limits and possible risks.
If a procedure is advised, discuss its specific risks and alternatives. Varicocele repair may involve recurrence, swelling or injury and does not guarantee better fertility. The expected benefit depends on individual findings.
Before your consultation.
- Bring semen reports and any previous fertility, hormone or ultrasound results.
- List medicines, supplements and previous treatment for both partners where relevant and with their consent.
- Ask the clinic about sample collection instructions rather than guessing how to prepare.
A few common questions.
Does a low sperm count mean pregnancy is impossible?
Does every varicocele need surgery?
Are IVF services available at this hospital?
